Walmart, Nestlé, Mars Exit U.S. Plastics Pact Ahead of 2030 Targets
May 29, 2025Major companies including Walmart, Nestlé, Mars, Mondelēz, and L’Oréal USA have exited the U.S. Plastics Pact as it shifts focus from its 2025 targets to more ambitious 2030 goals. The voluntary initiative, launched in 2020, aimed for 100% reusable, recyclable, or compostable packaging and 30% recycled content.
Companies cited slow infrastructure progress, high costs, and challenges in meeting goals. Walmart and Mars acknowledged falling short despite efforts, while non-profits like the National Stewardship Action Council also withdrew due to participation fees and limited benefits.
Despite the departures, firms like Aldi and Kraft Heinz remain committed under a new program, supporting updated goals that include cutting virgin plastic use by 30%. The future of corporate plastic sustainability remains uncertain as global plastic treaty talks continue.
