Coveris Invests in Expanding Technical Film Production Capacity
November 26, 2024Coveris, a leading European packaging manufacturer, has announced a significant investment in its polyethylene extrusion facility in Winsford, Cheshire. The Winsford site, recognized as Coveris’ UK center of excellence for high-performance technical barrier and stretch films, continues to enhance its capabilities in the production of sustainable, recyclable films as part of the company’s No Waste strategy.
Key Investments and Enhancements
The investment includes the addition of advanced production technologies and infrastructure:
- Nine-Layer Blown Extrusion Line: The installation of a state-of-the-art nine-layer blown extrusion line for EVOH barrier films positions Coveris as the largest UK producer of polyethylene EVOH barrier films. These recyclable films are designed to extend shelf life for short-life food products such as meat, fish, poultry, cheese, and bakery items. This upgrade also supports Coveris’ innovative products, including the MonoFlex and PolyFlex ranges, and enhances its capabilities in thermoforming and vacuum skin packaging (VSP).
- Cast Stretch Extrusion Line: A new cast extrusion line for stretch films will complement the site’s existing range of blown stretch and pre-stretch products. Scheduled to begin production in December 2024, this line will focus on films for machinery applications in sectors like bottling, canning, transport, and logistics. In line with sustainability goals, these films will meet UK Plastic Packaging Tax requirements by incorporating a minimum of 30% recycled content.
- Onsite Warehouse Expansion: A new 5,000-pallet capacity warehouse is under construction, nearly tripling the site’s current storage capabilities. Expected to be operational by Q1 2025, this facility aims to streamline logistics, reduce transportation needs, and improve service efficiency for packaging solutions targeting short shelf-life products.
Advancing Sustainability and Innovation
The Winsford site’s increased capacity for technical films aligns with Coveris’ sustainability goals. The new EVOH barrier technology supports downgauging projects, which reduce material usage while maximizing performance. This approach is integral to extending product shelf life, advancing recyclability, and reducing environmental impact.
Leadership Perspective
Sujoy Bose, Managing Director at Coveris Winsford, emphasized the importance of these upgrades:
“These developments demonstrate our commitment to innovation and sustainability in packaging. By integrating recycled content, enhancing recyclability, and improving material efficiency, we aim to lead the industry toward a more sustainable future. These investments reinforce our dedication to Coveris’ No Waste strategy and sustainability culture.”
Expansion in Vacuum Skin Packaging (VSP)
Building on its expertise in nine-layer EVOH barrier film production, Coveris Winsford has also expanded into the vacuum skin packaging (VSP) market. A new manufacturing hall equipped with advanced VSP conversion technology now supports applications in meat, fish, and dairy sectors, further diversifying the site’s portfolio and enhancing its market presence.
These strategic investments highlight Coveris Winsford’s role as a key player in developing innovative, sustainable packaging solutions for the evolving needs of the global market.
