Amcor installs modular plastic recycling plant in the UK

Amcor has become the first international packaging group in Europe to deploy Greenback Recycling Technologies’ modular recycling system for flexible plastics at its Heanor site in the UK.

The six-month commissioning and testing phase will feature Enval’s microwave-induced pyrolysis technology, capable of processing multilayer and aluminum-laminated films — materials typically considered non-recyclable. The installation also integrates eco2Veritas, a blockchain- and AI-based traceability platform that ensures complete transparency of the recycled material’s lifecycle.

Amcor’s Andrew Green said the initiative “combines Greenback’s innovation with Amcor’s operational expertise to enhance circularity for flexible plastics and help customers achieve their sustainability goals.”

Greenback CEO Philippe von Stauffenberg added that the partnership provides valuable real-time feedback from industry experts as the company scales its technology globally.

While the exact capacity of the Heanor module has not been disclosed, Greenback operates a similar unit at Nestlé’s Cuautla facility in Mexico, which can recycle approximately 2,000 tonnes of plastic packaging annually. The Heanor project marks a milestone in advancing scalable chemical recycling solutions within Europe’s flexible packaging sector.
