Amcor Expands North American Flexibles Capacity for Protein Market

Amcor has announced a major expansion of its North American flexibles operations, adding new printing, lamination, and converting equipment through mid-2026 to boost capacity for protein packaging. The company described it as one of its largest investments to date, though the exact amount was not disclosed.

Flexible packaging now represents more than half of Amcor’s global business, with $3.26 billion in net sales last quarter. The added capacity will support forming and non-forming formats and accelerate growth of the company’s AmPrima recycle-ready line.

Scott Fallon, global VP and GM of Amcor Flexibles’ protein division, said the investment aligns with Amcor’s long-term strategy to grow in high-margin categories such as protein. Market drivers include rising online protein sales, premium packaging demand, and innovation in pack sizes.

AmPrima, designed for recyclability, now accounts for about half of Amcor’s flexible output by weight. Recent applications include Agropur’s cheddar cheese packs, which Amcor says achieved an 82% weight reduction versus paperboard overpacks.

While cheese packaging remains strong, CEO Peter Konieczny noted soft demand in meat due to value-conscious consumers. Amcor is also evaluating a potential sale of its North America beverage business as it sharpens its flexibles focus.
