Mondi is expanding its innovation capabilities in eCommerce packaging by combining advanced material science, design expertise, and real-world logistics testing to create sustainable, high-performance solutions.

To further accelerate its innovation strategy, Gavin Mounce joined Mondi as eCommerce Innovation and Application Director on 1 November 2025. With extensive experience in packaging design and innovation on both the retailer and supplier sides, he will lead efforts to enhance collaboration between Mondi’s paper, product design, and converting teams.

“eCommerce packaging innovation is about creating value for our customers and the environment,” said Armand Schoonbrood, COO Mondi eCommerce. “Gavin brings a retailer’s perspective, helping us design packaging that works for both people and planet.”
Mounce added, “I’m excited to lead a team that turns groundbreaking ideas into tested, real-world solutions – from concept to the customer’s door.”

Among Mondi’s recent innovations is the Protective Mailer, a fully recyclable paper mailer that replaces plastic bubble wrap with open-flute paper, offering high product protection and sustainability. The solution, co-created with a leading online marketplace, exemplifies Mondi’s collaborative, eco-focused approach.

At the heart of Mondi’s innovation process is its ThinkBox Bupak customer engagement centre in Budweis, Czech Republic, equipped with an ISTA-certified testing laboratory. The lab conducts standardized ISTA transit tests that replicate real-world shipping conditions to ensure packaging durability and performance. Its certification has been renewed until October 2027, reaffirming Mondi’s position as a Certified Testing Laboratory member of the International Safe Transit Association (ISTA).

“Testing is a crucial part of innovation. Our ISTA-certified lab ensures every solution survives the journey from warehouse to customer,” said Schoonbrood.

The facility also operates under the Amazon APASS Network, enabling customers to certify packaging compliant with Amazon’s Tier 1–3 (FFP, SIOC, PFP) requirements, supporting the industry’s shift toward reducing packaging volume and waste in eCommerce logistics.
