Uteco launches Sapphire Evo hybrid press

April 30, 2018 Off By Sebastian Reisig

Uteco announced the commercial availability of the Sapphire EVO hybrid press. The press is designed for printing on a wide range of packaging films and papers and is intended for short and medium sized runs with production volumes of up to 20 million sqm per annum.

Sapphire EVO uses Kodak’s Stream Inkjet technology to print with environmental friendly water-based inks. According to Uteco, the printing capacity is 9000 running meters per hour. The press can use substrates of a width of up to 650 mm wide and has a maximum print width of 622 mm. It prints in CMYK and offers options for inline primer application and spot colours. Kodak’s inks and primer solutions used with the Sapphire EVO are designed to comply with EU and US regulatory requirements for indirect food contact.

Aldo Peretti, CEO of the Uteco Group, comments: “Our customers have been asking for a digital production solution that meets their customer demand for more versions, which is driving shorter run lengths, as well as an economic long-run digital solution. Uteco’s rich experience in flexo and gravure printing, film handling, coating and drying, coupled with Kodak’s inkjet expertise, now allows us to deliver a device that combines the capabilities of flexo with digital.”

Sold worldwide, the Uteco Group will begin installation of the first unit in June 2018 at an Italian flexible packaging producer for the industrial and fashion industries. Until then the hybrid press remains at Uteco’s ConverDrome for demo runs.
