The Winning Design For ‘Smart Luxury Packaging’ Competition Becomes A Reality

Antalis recently announced the winners of the ‘Smart Luxury Packaging – Cosmetics Brief’ competition – a collaborative initiative with leading art institution Norwich University of the Arts and Brief Cases, an organisation that links business and education. The competition required students to respond to the challenges of the pandemic by addressing new realities for brands such as the increase in online purchases and the consequential need to deliver an emotive experience.

Coming in first place was ‘Dip’ packaging by Lily Tye, a Graphic Design student at the university. Lily was aiming to create a sustainable, luxurious, pool-friendly product for swimmers. Antalis, with the help of Pollard Boxes and Greenshires Print, has now turned her packaging design into a reality, inviting Lily to participate in production.

Both Pollard Boxes and Greenshires Print both gave Lily a full site tour including Pollard Boxes’ innovation and design hub and took Lily step by step through each process involved in carton production.  At Greenshires, Lily pressed the print button and watched her ‘Dip’ artwork being digitally printed on their Fuji Jetpress 7205. The day ended with a visit to the CAD department where Lily saw the printed sheets creased and cut on a plotting table before being given the opportunity to make up the very first ‘Dip’ box by hand. The ‘Dip’ packaging will be unveiled on the Antalis stand at the Packaging Innovations event at Olympia, London, this December.

Lily commented, “The competition, and my involvement in production, was a real education for me and my personal development. The board material, Performa Light, Antalis supplied for the project made my designs come to life exactly as I had envisaged. I am so happy to have been given the chance to see behind the scenes and the knowledge I have gained is invaluable.”

Steve Chappell, Graphical Board Development Manager at Antalis, commented, “Antalis was proud to support this project, which is a perfect example of working in partnership to encourage the next generation of packaging design talent.  Antalis is currently working on the exciting new Brief Cases brief for 2022 – Luxury Packaging for the Drinks Sector.”
