Terphane, the leader in BOPET films in Latin America and an important global player, first purchased a metallizer from BOBST over 20 years ago. Since then the relationship has grown with Terphane’s purchase of two more machines.

Production of High Barrier Films
The current trend in the market is for high barrier transparent packaging that allows consumers to see the contents of the package. The addition of the new BOBST machine provides Terphane with the ability to produce AlOx film and increase its production of transparent films. AlOx film is also recyclable, making it ideal for companies looking to contribute to a circular economy.

The DarkNight® process produces high barrier metallized films through defect reduction and web-handling optimization. The process works in conjunction with BOBST Hawkeye and provides three advantages: defect reduction, improved barrier levels and improved visual appearance of the film.

The third process featured on the machine is AluBond® which produces films with a high bonding strength.

High Productivity
As well as incorporating three innovative BOBST processes, the K5 EXPERT purchased by Terphane features a 700mm coating drum and a High Deposition source.

The coating drum is the largest in the industry and improves collection efficiency by 16%, which reduces aluminium consumption and increases boat life, resulting in maximum productivity. The High Deposition source has an improved design that allows for higher operating speed for jobs that require a rate of up to 4.0 OD. Reduced distance between adjacent boats gives better coating uniformity.

Commenting on the new machine, José Bosco Silveira Jr, President of Terphane said, “We purchased our first metallizer from BOBST back in 1998 and have enjoyed a successful relationship with them. We are especially impressed with the range of different processes that BOBST offers and are proud to be the only company in the Americas that will be able to run three processes on one machine. We look forward to continuing our relationship with BOBST for many more years to come.”
