Russian petrochemicals company Sibur has opened a research and development (R&D) centre to test and develop polymer products in the country.

The new R&D centre is called Sibur PolyLab and was inaugurated by Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev.

Located at the Skolkovo Innovation Centre, the new facility is the first of its kind in Russia. It will devise methodologies to develop existing products using polymers, as well as support technological advancements.

Polymers are synthetic materials widely across various industries for their durability and eco-friendliness. They are used in various forms in construction, automotive, healthcare, food and other industries.

Covering more than 5,000m², the centre is equipped with advanced equipment units to carry out R&D projects such as injection moulding, compounding and modelling other ways of processing polymers into end-products.

The establishment of the polymer R&D centre is aligned with Sibur’s efforts to use global research findings to develop new polymer properties.

The lab will also encourage the use of recycled materials and using polymers to support the concept of a circular economy.

In addition, the laboratory is expected to boost the competitive-edge of domestic polymers and polymer-based products.

Medvedev said: “Sibur PolyLab R&D centre is the first project of its kind in Russia, and I hope it will enjoy strong demand.
