Marijuana in the Workplace

January 27, 2021 Off By Sebastian Reisig

AICC, The Independent Packaging Association, is offering an updated webinar, Marijuana in the Workplace with instructor Christine V. Walters, J.D., MAS, SHRM-SCP, SPHR, Independent Consultant, FiveL Company on Thursday, February 11 at 2:00 pm ET.

Across the nation we see three trends related to laws addressing the use of marijuana: (1) legalization; (2) decriminalization; (3) and legal use of medically prescribed marijuana. Each has actual or potential implications in the workplace.

States continue to expand the employment-related rights of individuals who use marijuana. Additionally, OSHA announced in its 2020 regulatory agenda that it will address workplace testing. With laws that decriminalize or legalize marijuana, prohibit related inquiries of applicants for employment, and testing of employees, it is becoming harder for employers to ensure workplace safety, productivity, and administer related programs.

This webinar will help attendees:

  • Understand how to balance federal law that still classifies marijuana as an illegal substance and state and local jurisdictions that permit its use for various reasons or in varying amounts
  •  Know when they may take adverse action against an applicant or employee who tests positive for substance use
  • Learn how an employer may conduct substance testing
  • Discover what duty, if any an employee has to inform an employer of the use of prescribed or otherwise legal drugs

Walters will also update attendees on OSHA’s regulatory agenda.
